When Roger Briney saw the corner of a tattered flag sticking out of a dumpster, he knew he had found something special. His patriotism drove him to rescue the old trunk from the trash compactor. He had no idea that simple act would create the conditions for a heartwarming reunion, 25 years in the making.
As an army veteran, Briney was angry when he saw an American flag that had been tossed carelessly into the trash. He served as a US Infantryman in the early 1970s. After his tours of duty were complete, he continued serving his country as an attendant at Arlington National Cemetery. After three years, he continued to show commitment to his country by joining the National Guard.
