Rory McIlroy is a famous golfer. He is also known for winning the U.S Open in 2011 and the PGA Championship in 2012. He also won the PGA Tour playoff and is the youngest golfer to do so.  Rory McIlroy is one of the wealthiest athletes ever to play the sport. His net worth is reported to be $90 million, mostly from golfing and endorsements.

A taurus, Rory McIlroy entered the world on May 4, 1989 at Holywood, County Downs, in Northern Ireland.
Rory’s parents were Gerry and Rosie McIlroy. Some people were astounded when Rory hit a 40 yard drive at the age of two, but his parents weren’t surprised at all.

McIlroy’s father started teaching him how to play golf when he first started walking and the child’s talent was recognized immediately.

Gerry McIlroy worked three jobs to pay for his son’s golf lessons, while Rory’s mother worked extra shifts at night.  McIlroy dropped out of school at age 16 in order to concentrate of golf.

Amateur Career
Rory began competing at the age of 8, made his first hole in one at 9, and scored his first international win in the 9-10 age division at the World Championships in Miami, Florida.

McIlroy played in the Junior Ryder Cup in 2004, and he played in his first professional event, the 2005 British Masters, at age 15.

Professional Career

As a record-busting star on the amateur golf circuit, Rory McIlroy turned professional in 2007 and immediately began setting records as a professional golfer.

His first year as a professional, he became the youngest affiliate member to earn a European Tour card. By 2008, he was the youngest player to rank among the world’s 50 best golfers.

In 2009, McIlroy won his first professional tournament at the Dubai Desert Classic. He competed in the U.S. Open and the Masters in 2009.

In 2014, McIlroy aced the 143rd British Open championship and guaranteed his spot in the annals of golfing history. He then won the 2014 U.S. PGA Championship, which was his fourth major.

Since then he has become a very successful pro golfer, but he has not been exempt from criticism. He’s been harangued by fans for skipping The Players Championship in 2011. He was one of the two of the top 50 pro golfers in the world who did not attend to the Championship.

Personal Life

When he’s not playing golf, McIlroy lives in his birthplace of County Down, Northern Ireland, and has his own practice facility. He has been dating Caroline Wozniacki, a Danish tennis pro, since 2011. The couple announced their engagement on New Year’s Eve 2013, but called it quits in 2014 just months before their planned November wedding.

Americans have taken McIlroy under their wing and he now has Nike, Bose, and Omega as his major sponsors. His wealth is estimated at $90 million.
